Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Maiden Address
During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Figure
The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
